2014 'Margaret' Cabernet Merlot Malbec Magnum
- Cabernet Sauvignon
- Cabernet Franc
2014 was a warm consistent year producing wines of balance, with a wet spring followed by warm dry conditions until February ripening the Merlot and Malbec to perfection. From March onwards the conditions cooled somewhat, and there was some rain in April which extending out the Cabernet Sauvignon harvest by up to 3 weeks.
Woodlands ‘Margaret’ is sourced entirely from the Woodlands Vineyard. The Cabernet Sauvignon portion comes from a slope on the south of Woodlands that wraps around a 90-degree radius from east to north. The fruit on this slope receives a great deal of direct sunlight from morning to mid-afternoon, leading to rich full-bodied wines. The Merlot and Malbec plots that make up the remainder of ‘Margaret’ come from our west-facing slope of deep loam soil. This slope receives the most direct afternoon sunlight at Woodlands, and produces more exotic fruit characters in the finished wine.
Following harvest, the fruit was destemmed, hand sorted, crushed and fermented in small stainless steel fermenters. Following fermentation, the Cabernet Sauvignon portions remained on skins for 34 days for added complexity and tannin integration. Once fermentation was complete this wine was transferred into French oak where it remained for 18 months. 50% percent of the barrels used to mature this wine were new.
Our 2014 ‘Margaret’ is a blend of 78% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Merlot, 8% Malbec and 1% Cabernet Franc. Bright crimson in colour, the nose is dominated by its Cabernet Sauvignon component- blackcurrant, black olive, mulberry, and cassis combining with fine-grained French oak notes. The palate is fine, dense and concentrated – ripe red and dark berry fruits, succulent middle palate, and plush tannin.
Our 2014 ‘Margaret’ will be best enjoyed from 2021 to 2034.
Deep, youthful purple/red colour and a superb bouquet of violets and blueberries laced with super-stylish cedary oak. A gloriously graceful, elegant, pure-fruit style of cabernet, with refined and controlled tannins and a long follow-through. Cleansing tannins to finish and a note of Chinato/bitter herbs, like its sister-wine, Clementine.
