2017 'Chloe' Chardonnay
Fruit solely from the Woodlands Vineyard
Our ‘Chloe’ is produced from a 0.8 hectare plot located at the north-east corner of the Woodlands Vineyard, immediately east of our original Cabernet Sauvignon plantings. The plot lies at the top of a south-facing slope where the soil is composed of deep loam topsoil over clay. This plot is the most shaded location on our vineyard- protected on the west, north and east.
2017 was a La Niña vintage, creating a mild summer and autumn. This created absolutely wonderful conditions for Chardonnay, however high winds in the spring severely limited the fruit set, and subsequent crop. Our whites from 2017 are alluring, fine, and complex, and the 2017 'Chloe' shows this most of all.
Our 2017 'Chloe' was handpicked on 11 March, then taken straight up the hill to the winery to be pressed immediately. The winemaking process continues the practices we used with the 2016 'Chloe'; Fermentation proceeded without any additions whatsoever, 10 months barrel maturation with the lees stirred monthly, and six months in tank to integrate and settle.
Please note our 2018 'Chloe' Chardonnay is now available en primeur. To secure a case of 'Chloe' visit the Woodlands Membership Packages page. Delivery July 2019.
The colour of this wine is intense pale gold. The nose is very complex, floral and polished, with cracked straw and orchard fruits featuring. The palate is, in a word, explosive. The weight of fruit really impresses itself on you here. A classic Wilyabrup Valley mix of orchard and tropical fruits mingle with caramel and marmelade, before finishing with bright balanced acidity.
In incredible wine, but unfortunately only a tiny quantity was made - 1350 bottles, 492 half-bottles, and 40 magnums produced.
Best enjoyed from 2022 - 2030.
